On the 1st of May 2011 in Rome beatification ceremony of John Paul II will take place. In this connection this year's Mystery Play in Warsaw is dedicated to the Holy Father. The perspective of the Jesus Christ's last moments of life leads to better understanding of the meaning and significance that the pontificate and the teaching of John Paul II carried.
The final scene is dedicated to John Paul II when the Holy Father appears at the gates of Jerusalem and surrounded by Angels – dancers of the Polish Dance Theatre – heads to meet the resurrected Jesus. The scene is moving and emotional. It is accompanied by the piece of music RESURRECTION by John Debney from the film PASSION directed by Mel Gibson. The dancers are holding in raised hands the Gospel which was leafed through by the wind during the funeral of John Paul II in 2005 in Rome. The emphasis is placed on the allegorical symbolism of the closure of the book signifying the fulfilment of the pontificate and actions of the Holy Spirit present during the whole life of the Holy Father.
The event is held under the auspices of the Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz. – I express a great joy that the Mystery Play, through Poznan, in year 2011 will take place in Warsaw. It gives the opportunity to thousands of people to prepare thoroughly to experience the Holy Week. – says Cardinal K. Nycz. – At the same time it is the chance to prepare specially for the joyful event of this year's beatification of the God's Servant John Paul II. I believe that he is a special participant of this Mystery Play not only by the actor but most of all in the mystery of Saints Communion in the God the Father's Home in Heaven – he adds.
On the 16th of April at 5.30 pm the Cardinal will serve a ceremonial Mess in Maksymilian Kolbe church in Rzymowskiego street at Sluzewiec in Warsaw. After the Mess everyone can walk directly to the Training Track of Horse Racecourse.
Polish Dance Theatre has been involved in the Mystery since 2006. – The Theatre having the same genesis of religious rites, was created out of the need of experiencing in community. The participation of the artist of the Polish Dance Theatre in the Mystery Play mirrors this symmetry as well as constitutes an individual spiritual declaration of every dancer – declares Ewa Wycichowska, head and artistic director of the Polish Dance Theatre – Although theatrical means are applied here, the Mystery Play is not a spectacle, it is rather a gate behind which everyone faces eschatological mystery - she adds. Ewa Wycichowska is the author of the choreography of the final scene. The artistic supervision over the dancers is held by Anna Gruszka-Kopeć. – It is not an ordinary spectacle as any other. This is related to beliefs, overwhelming emotions. Our dancers participate in it voluntarily. – says Anna Gruszka-Kopeć, the head of ballet in the Polish Dance Theatre. – The scene in which we play is mystical. Pages of the Gospel turning on their own directly relate to the funeral of the Pope, the Pole – she adds.
The role of pope is played by an actor Piotr Witoń. – Every time it is a huge experience for me. I know that I feel only a little of what John Paul II felt evoking emotions in people but I have to admit that it is a fantastic feeling. It charges the batteries for the whole year – admits Piotr Witoń. – This character is the explosion of the positive emotions. When performing I ask myself the question: Am I worth it?- he adds.
